Ep.097 Wikipedia Lyrics |
Info: Pearl Jam is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1990. Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar) and Jeff Ament (bass guitar), were members of pioneering grunge band Green River during the mid-1980s. In 1987, they began playing with Malfunkshun vocalist Andrew Wood, eventually organizing the band Mother Love Bone. The band’s debut album, Apple, was released in July 1990, four months after Wood died of a heroin overdose. After the band’s demise, Gossard started practicing with fellow Seattle guitarist Mike McCready (lead guitar), whose band, Shadow, had broken up. McCready in turn encouraged Gossard to reconnect with Ament. Meanwhile Eddie Vedder (lead vocals, guitar) was the lead vocalist for a San Diego band, Bad Radio, and worked part-time at a gas station. He recorded in a demo, the vocals to three of the songs ("Alive", "Once", and "Footsteps") and sent the tape to the three musicians. Within a week, he had joined the band. With the addition of Dave Krusen on drums, the band took the name Mookie Blaylock, in reference to the then-active All-Star basketball player. However, trademark issues forced a name change; the band became "Pearl Jam". In March 1991 the band started to record its debut album, Ten. After Krusen and his substitute Matt Chamberlain both left the band, Dave Abbruzzese joined the group. Ten (named after Mookie Blaylock's jersey number), was released in August 1991. Ten has become one of the highest-selling rock records ever, going 13x platinum. Pearl Jam became a key member of the Seattle grunge explosion, along with Alice in Chains, Nirvana, and Soundgarden. In October 1993, Pearl Jam's second album, Vs. was released. Before finishing the next album, drummer, Dave Abbruzzese was fired and replaced by Jack Irons. Vitalogy was then released in November 1994. The CD became the second-fastest-selling in history. No Code (1996) and Yekd (1998) followed the Vitalogy success. In April 1998, Jack Irons left the band and was replaced by Matt Cameron. In May 2000, Pearl Jam released its sixth studio album, Binaural. The album became the first Pearl Jam album to fail to reach platinum status. Pearl Jam then released Riot Act in November 2002, Pearl Jam in May 2006, Backspacer in 2009 and most recently its tenth album Lightning Bolt in October 2013. Over the course of the band's career its members became noted for their refusal to adhere to traditional music industry practices, including refusing to make music videos and engaging in a much-publicised boycott of Ticketmaster. To date, the band has sold an estimated 60 million worldwide. | |
